Neck injuries after a New Mexico auto accident can result in severely disabling conditions.  Sometimes these are classified as “soft tissue injuries,” usually by defense lawyers trying to mitigate you loss.  But soft tissue injuries to the neck can be excruciating, permanent, and even catastrophic.  Not only could this be due to damage to your neck from paralysis or pain, but neck injuries can also affect head injuries and result in brain injuries.  Our experienced Albuquerque auto accident lawyer explains how neck injuries from a car accident could result in big problems in this article.

Understanding Neck Injuries and Soft Tissue Injuries

Unless there are broken bones, must neck injuries are classified as soft tissue injuries.  This is a classification of injury which relates to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, discs, blood vessels, nerves, and other structures in your neck.  Many times this is a broad classification which is used by a defense lawyer to make it appear your injuries are less serious because an exact diagnosis cannot be made.

They are wrong!

Soft tissue injuries to the neck can result in excruciating pain when the nerves are injured.  Sometimes damage to the blood vessels could even result in brain injuries due to oxygen deficiencies.  Some victims with soft tissue neck injuries may have an incredibly restricted range of motion, meaning they cannot turn their head to look over their shoulder.  Other times soft tissue neck injuries will prevent a person from picking up a child, or caring for a loved one.

Common Neck Injuries in New Mexico Auto Accidents

As an experienced Albuquerque auto accident lawyer, our firm knows that soft tissue injuries are very serious and should never be referenced to lower the seriousness of a victim’s injuries.  Neck injuries are particularly devastating as they affect nearly every facet of your life.

Some of the most serious and common neck injuries after car wrecks include the following:

Whiplash injuries – the sudden back-and-forth motion from a car accident impact causes the head to “whip” forward and back in such a violent way that muscle, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, and other structures in your neck can literally tear and sheer right off.  in addition to causing extreme pain, this type of injury could result in permanent range of motion restrictions, permanent loss of sensation or function, and permanent weight lifting/carrying or push/pull limitations.

Cervical (neck) disc injuries – When a cervical disc is injured in the neck because it ruptures, tears, splits, slips, or is otherwise forced out of place, it can cause catastrophic injuries–especially if it slips into the spinal cord.  Disc injuries frequently require surgical intervention such as a cervical fusion.  This invasive surgery removes a portion of a person’s vertebrae and spinal disc and uses painful hardware such as screws, rods, and plates to permanently fuse or stabilize a person’s neck.

Paralysis – If the spinal cord in the neck is damage or severed, it could result in paraplegia or tetraplegia which means permanent loss of sensation and function in either both lower extremities or in all extremities.

Brain injuries – Major blood vessels run to the brain from the neck.  Severe damage to the neck, even closed-injuries such as severe whiplash or closed fractures, could damage these vessels or constrict the flow of oxygen from the heart to the brain.
