Albuquerque Trucking Accidents Resulting in Broken Bones Need Internal Fixation

New Mexico crashes with large commercial trucks like big rigs, tankers,18 wheelers, semi tractor trailers, and other large box trucks usually result in serious personal injuries and wrongful death. This is particularly true in high speed crashes like on I-10, I-40, and I-25. Albuquerque trucking accidents are simply very dangerous and devastating types of injuries. One of the most common injuries is a broken bone. However, since large 18 wheelers have significant force behind them in a collision, bones do not just break but they can shatter. Bones splintering in multiple pieces are known as a comminuted fracture. This usually requires internal fixation to repair which means surgery. This can be incredibly painful and will likely subject an individual to have physical therapy and other treatment.

Here at the NM Truck Accident Attorneys, our experienced Albuquerque trucking accident lawyers know that 18 wheeler wrecks causing internal fixation could result in serious pain and suffering. We have handled many cases with internal fixation for many clients against some of the largest trucking companies in the United States, including J.B. Hunt, Schneider National, FedEx, UPS, US Mail, and other companies. Call us for a FREE consultation if you have been injured in a semi tractor trailer crash and need internal fixation.

What is Internal Fixation?

Internal fixation is the medical term for placing screws, plates, pins, rods, wires, cables, or other hardware into a person’s body to stabilize a bone or joint that has been injured. This is done with an “open reduction,” meaning the traditional thought of surgery which is with an open incision. There is also external fixation and a closed reduction which is with external hardware, such as a halo cast. This is different than internal fixation because internal fixation generally stays inside the body, whereas external fixation all or almost all of it comes out of the body. Internal fixation can, however, be removed in a second surgery if the hardware is likely to cause problems in the future or if the hardware is painful to the patient.

Types of Surgeries from Albuquerque Trucking Accidents Requiring Internal Fixation

There are many different types of surgeries requiring internal fixation which could result from a serious New Mexico big rig crash. These surgeries typically are invasive and painful, and can result in extreme pain for weeks following the surgery and residual pain for months later.

The most common types of surgeries requiring internal fixation include for these types of injuries:

  • Any type of avulsion fracture (when a part of bone breaks off);
  • Any type of comminuted fracture (when the bone shatters into many pieces);
  • Trimalleolar fracture and bimalleolar fracture (ankle fractures);
  • Wrist fractures, particularly radial avulsions;
  • Fractures of the A/C joint in the shoulder;
  • Collarbone fractures;
  • Hip fractures;
  • Orbital blowout fractures;
  • Pelvic fractures; and
