Fractures and Broken Bones from New Mexico Trucking Crashes: Albuquerque Trucking Crash Lawyer Shares Common Fractures

Large commercial trucks pack a wallop when they collide with smaller, passenger vehicles. This is particularly true when the collision occurs on a fast-moving highway like one of New Mexico’s busy interstates such as I-10, I-25, or I-40. Because of this, it is very likely that there will be serious personal injuries including wrongful death. One type of serious personal injury is a broken bone or fractured bone. There are many types of common broken bones from trucking crashes. These can be very painful, lead to months of recovery, and generate high medical bills. This is all while there will be lost wages and time from work. Some fractures are also life-threatening or limb-threatening, and can result in wrongful death or amputation.

Here at the NM Truck Accident Attorneys, we know how painful, debilitating, and damaging broken bones caused by New Mexico trucking crashes can be for a victim and his or her family. Bone Fractures from New Mexico Trucking Crashes

The force of a trucking collision can and usually does break the bones of victims in smaller vehicles. These fractures can range from painful to life-threatening. In a trucking crash, there are some bones that are commonly broken or fractured which result in very serious and debilitating injury. These include the following:

  • Skull fractures – one of the scariest bones to fracture is your skull because it can puncture or penetrate your brain and cause permanent injury. Skull fractures can bring out a wide variety of injuries and disabilities even if the brain is unharmed. Many times emergency is necessary not only to repair the fracture, but also to save the life of the victim.
  • Pelvic fractures – one of the most painful fractures, a pelvic fracture can take 6 months or even years to recover. A broken pelvis can result in significant and long-term recovery and rehabilitation. Usually future arthritis or damage makes a hip replacement likely. Pelvic fractures are also dangerous because major vessels and nerves could be injured or severed, resulting in the loss of sensation or the need to amputate a limb.
  • Femur fractures – the femur is the strongest bone in the body. When the femur fractures, there is an extremely high amount of pressure and force on it. This usually results in a massive “explosion” of bone in the large, likely damaging nerves and arteries (like the femoral artery). Femur fractures can take months if not years to heal, and usually require surgery with pins, screws, rods, and bars.
  • Tibia/fibula fracture – a “tib/fib” fracture may not be the most painful fracture, but it is a very common fracture in any motor vehicle crash because it usually occurs at the bottom of the leg. Unfortunately, tib/fib fractures can be some of the longest lasting and debilitating of the broken bones because they do not always set properly. The bottom of the leg and top of the foot is a very active joint, and everything you do-even laying down-can cause pressure on the heel and result in pain.
  • Spinal fractures – Another very scary type of fracture is a spinal fracture. This is when the spinal column, made up of hard vertebrae, cracks and fractures. The spinal cord is encased within this column, which can be damaged or even severed if the spinal fracture is severe enough. This can lead to a paralyzing injury or even death.
  • Wrist and arm fractures – It is common for a person’s wrist or arm to be smashed into the side of a vehicle or hit the dashboard in a high-impact collision. Wrist and arm fractures are common in trucking crashes, but usually heal quickly. However, they are usually very painful and usually require surgery to repair the damage. This is particularly true of the radial/ulner bones by the wrist, which can float or be “avulsed” which means they have brown away from the main bone. This requires doctors to do in and screw or pin it back to the main bone in a very painful open reduction surgery.
