Common Surgeries After New Mexico Trucking Accidents

There are many possible surgeries that could be caused by New Mexico trucking accidents.  After all, big rigs, box trucks, and other semi tractor trailers are large and powerful enough that no part of your body is safe.  Even the strongest bones, such as the femur, can be pulverized by these massive 18 wheelers in even a low-speed collision.  But when there are high-speed collisions such as on fast-moving highways and interstates like I-10, I-25, or I-40, the results are usually catastrophic and tragic.

Some of the most common surgeries necessary are New Mexico trucking accidents include the following:

Life-saving surgeries – Any types of surgery to stop the bleeding and begin to immediately repair damage are common.  Big rigs just cause so much damage, and life-saving surgeries are commonly needed.  This includes draining blood from the thoracic and abdominal cavity, or relieving pressure on the brain by removing part of the skull or draining fluids.

Brain Surgeries – Not only are brain surgeries life-saving functions, but they could also be necessary to remove debris, remove or drain bleeding, or clamp a bleed in the brain.

Spinal Fusions – When the spinal cord, spinal column (vertebrae), and other vital structures coming off of the spine such as the nerves, blood vessels, or other important tissue is so severely damaged that it cannot heal or be repaired, it may be necessary to actually “lock” the vertebrae that are near the damage.  This is to prevent the vertebrae, which flex and move together, from further damaging itself or the vital structures.  This means that part of the vertebrae will be removed and replaced with rods, screws, plates, and other surgical hardware to prevent those vertebrae from moving.  This is a permanent and non-reversible surgery.

Orbital Blowout Fracture Surgery – When your face is injured in a collision, even from just the powerful blast of an airbag, certain bones in your face could be injured.  The orbital bone around your eye socket is particularly vulnerable in motor vehicle accidents and frequently needs to be immediately repaired because the orbital bone supports the eye in the eye socket.  If the orbital bone is broken, it may result in permanent vision loss or damage to the eye.

Open Reduction Fracture Repair – Some fractured bones are so bad that they require surgery to realign them.  Other times the violence of the New Mexico trucking accident results in a compound fracture, when the bone breaks the skin, which always requires surgical intervention.

Amputations – The ultimate limb injury surgery is an amputation.  This is when there are no possible ways to save a limb from the trauma caused to it from an 18 wheeler wreck, and the limb must be removed to save the life of a patient.
